Alberta Security Guard License Practice Exam

Getting licensed as a security guard in Alberta runs through the Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) course, a minimum 40 hours across all required modules, followed by a provincial exam you take online under proctor supervision. Alberta Justice and Solicitor General sets the requirements under the Security Services and Investigators Act.

The exam itself: online, proctored, 80% or higher required to pass, paid separately to the exam provider at $60. Once you clear it, provincial certification lets you apply for your actual Security License, which carries a separate $100 licensing fee and stays valid for 2 years.

That's two separate fees for two separate steps, worth budgeting for both rather than assuming the training cost covers everything through to your license in hand.

Before any of this, Alberta requires a mandatory criminal record check for every applicant, plus standard age, residency, and language competency requirements. None of that is exam content, but all of it gates whether you're eligible to sit for the exam at all, so confirm your eligibility status before investing time in ABST coursework.

Because it's proctored and online rather than an in-person written test, logistics matter here as much as content: a stable connection, an appropriate testing environment, and understanding your provider's specific proctoring requirements in advance saves you from a technical hiccup undermining solid preparation.

Content draws from the full ABST curriculum: legal authorities and limitations for security guards, emergency response procedures, conflict de-escalation, report writing, and professional conduct standards under Alberta's Security Services and Investigators Act.

Since the passing bar is 80%, not a simple majority, and it's your only shot without additional cost and scheduling, genuine command of the ABST material before exam day matters more than treating the online format as low-pressure just because you're testing from home.

Our practice questions cover the core ABST competency areas, legal authority, emergency response, de-escalation, and report writing, with explanations for every answer.
